County-level functions, such as public transport, are exercised by joint-boards and other arrangements organised by the district councils. In the metropolitan counties, the 36 district councils operate effectively as unitary authorities and provide the majority of services, including education and social services. Through incremental change, culminating in , the upper-tier authority is the Greater London Authority , comprising an elected Mayor of London and the London Assembly.
There were cases of alcoholism, drug abuse, and collapsed marriages involving people who had witnessed the events.
History[ edit ] Settlement in the Mansfield area is known to date back to Roman times, with a villa discovered in by a Major Rooke between Mansfield Woodhouse and Pleasley and a cache of denarii coins found near King’s Mill in By the time of King Richard II signing a Warrant in November granting the right for the tenants to hold a fair every year for four days, the spelling had changed again to Mannesfeld. Access to the town was via a small horse-drawn carriageway from the city of Nottingham that was en route to Sheffield. History of Technology Heroes and Villains – A little light reading Here you will find a brief history of technology. Initially inspired by the development of batteries, it covers technology in general and includes some interesting little known, or long forgotten, facts as well as a few myths about the development of technology, the science behind it, the context in which it occurred and the deeds of the many personalities, eccentrics and charlatans involved.
You may find the Search Engine , the Technology Timeline or the Hall of Fame quicker if you are looking for something or somebody in particular. Scroll down and see what treasures you can discover. Background We think of a battery today as a source of portable power, but it is no exaggeration to say that the battery is one of the most important inventions in the history of mankind.
Volta’s pile was at first a technical curiosity but this new electrochemical phenomenon very quickly opened the door to new branches of both physics and chemistry and a myriad of discoveries, inventions and applications. The electronics, computers and communications industries, power engineering and much of the chemical industry of today were founded on discoveries made possible by the battery. Pioneers It is often overlooked that throughout the nineteenth century, most of the electrical experimenters, inventors and engineers who made these advances possible had to make their own batteries before they could start their investigations.
They did not have the benefit of cheap, off the shelf, mass produced batteries. For many years the telegraph, and later the telephone, industries were the only consumers of batteries in modest volumes and it wasn’t until the twentieth century that new applications created the demand that made the battery a commodity item. In recent years batteries have changed out of all recognition.
No longer are they simple electrochemical cells. Today the cells are components in battery systems, incorporating electronics and software, power management and control systems, monitoring and protection circuits, communications interfaces and thermal management.

Emergency services – including forty firefighters – were called to the scene involved six vehicles – including a black cab. Shocked witnesses have described the carnage including one woman who saw “people lying lifeless” in the road.
She said the fatal collision was “the most horrible thing” she has ever witnessed.
There are also claims that the Archimedes’ Screw may have been invented in Mesopotamia and used for the water systems at the Hanging Gardens of Babylon.
Could not subscribe, try again laterInvalid Email Manchester United had already taken two short corners and after Henrikh Mkhitaryan tapped the ball to Antonio Valencia for the third time those in the Sharp End vented their exasperation at the indirect decision. Stoke easily cleared and a minute later took the lead. When the ball was finally swung in directly, United scored and almost won the game with another direct centre in stoppage-time.
United had 11 corners at Stoke and are the second tallest side in the Premier League behind West Brom, so their reluctance to compete aerially was perplexing. It was not the only time Jose Mourinho overestimated Mark Hughes’ side. The decision to omit a forward Juan Mata for a midfielder Ander Herrera paid Stoke an excessive amount of respect. They finished 13th in the Premier League last season and rancour simmered last month among supporters who suspect the club has hit a ceiling under Hughes.
Their performance on Saturday was maybe their poorest at home to United under the former City manager. That did not quite stack up when other top six sides won comfortably on Saturday and the humdrum handshake incident diverted attention away from some of the Portuguese’s mistakes. One of them was starting Matteo Darmian, who was dropped at Stoke last season.

Many discussions were held at our Charity Meetings during the year covering a wide variety of topics enabling all to express their views and opinions ensuring all decisions made were for the good of the Village and I would like to remind everyone what the Charity has been involved in. By us holding these meetings it has facilitated the Charity to ensure the Village prospers appropriately.
Firstly it was brought to our attention that there were problems with the French Drain adjacent to the Multi Use Area, it needed protecting from damage by vehicles and we were informed that the Hammond Hall Sub-committee were looking into ways of how this area could be safeguarded. Early on in the year a suggestion was made for ideas to be brought forward to the Committee for projects that the Charity could be involved in whether they be short term or long term ventures.
Surprisingly however, in years, they didn’t advance significantly on the legacies of mathematics and scientific theories left to them by the Greeks.
